The Wedding Dress Baby Blanket - The Little Bird Designs

A few months ago my friend asked me to take her wedding dress and make a baby blanket with some of it. Of course I had to say yes because I was beyond honoured that she would ask me! I was incredibly nervous to cut into the dress but I set to it and did my best to only take what was needed so if the need arises I can make a second blanket for another baby!

We chose soft and squishy minky fleece for the back, flannel for the front and then I cut out some hearts from the Silk along with the hem to use on the edge!

The blanket came out even better than I could have imagined and my friend was so excited to see it that she rushed over right away to pick it up! Here it is in all it’s glory 🙂

It was the first time I did an edge like this along with doing the heart appliques. I first did a zigzag stitch around the hearts on the flannel then once it was all together I stitched around them to give them a puffy look!

I added in an extra quilted heart to keep the layers from separating. It was really hard to get clear photos before she picked it up because it was dark and rainy outside and in my Sewing room. I’m so excited that I was able to get it done because her due date was yesterday! Maybe that baby will arrive now that their room is all set up!

I’m so happy with this blanket but I want to know: Would you turn your wedding dress into a baby blanket or will you be keeping it stored away?

  1. Love it, what a great idea….I have already used some of my wedding dress veil for my daughter’s wedding bouquet ~ how great would it be to use some of my dress for grandchildren’s blankets… 🙂
