I am so excited to bring you my latest celebration of Mario Day! 2 years ago I created a Stand Up Clutch for my son’s Nintendo DS so this year I wanted to take it to a whole new level!
For quite some time now, I have been wanting to make a Mario themed quilt so I jumped right in and went for it! 540 squares later, I had some incredible and fun rows for the coolest quilt I have ever made!
It was so much fun to see those rows come together especially when I was pressing all the seams! I felt like Mario was waving at me as I ironed! Just look at that smiling face!
To keep on theme, I did basic quilting along the row lines to enhance the pixelated look. While I didn’t do all the rows, the ones I did, created the right amount of texture!
It might be hard to see but I used brick fabric for the binding because Mario does smash bricks after all! We went with soft fireside material for the backing so it’ll be nice and cozy for the kiddo! He loves the texture and because it is thinner and less stretchy than Minky, it was much easier to quilt!
The finished quilt comes out to 48 inches by 79 inches. The perfect size for a twin bed or lap quilt. It’s a nice and snuggly size!
What’s the most exciting part of making this quilt, aside from getting it done and the size? I wrote down the steps so that you can make one too!
I’ve included all the colours of fabrics you will need, the size I cut the squares plus 2 different graph options to follow along while quilting. I also included my tips and tricks to make the sewing go a smoothly as possible!
Ready to give this quilt a go too? Pop your email below and I’ll send you the pattern right away! I cannot wait to see more Mario quilts pop up in the wild!
Happy Mario Day!
P.S. Shout out to The Quilter’s Bolt (Kate) for all her quilting tips and most of my fabrics and to Kawartha Quilting Systems for the fireside backing!
